Your skin in summer.
It hasn't become strange. The scenario has changed.
You apply the same products as in May, but now your skin reacts differently. It feels tight, oily, and irritated.
It's not the routine. In two months, your barrier is dealing with four things at once—chlorine, UV, air conditioning, sweat—that don't accumulate the rest of the year.

What really changes
Four aggressors
that overlap in summer.
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the epidermis. Its job is to keep water in and aggressors out. Individually, none of these four factors breaks it. It's the combination that puts it under pressure.
Chlorine
In atopic skin, free residual chlorine reduces the water retention capacity of the stratum corneum. In healthy swimmers, TEWL immediately increases upon exiting the water but usually reverts within about 30 minutes.

UV Radiation
UV reduces barrier function, alters stratum corneum lipids, and degrades cohesion and corneodesmosomes. The damage is subclinical and cumulative even if no sunburn appears.

Low ambient humidity
Air-conditioned environments maintain low relative humidity. Low humidity increases TEWL, reduces stratum corneum hydration, and decreases elasticity.

Heat and sweat
Increasing skin temperature by 7–8 ºC doubles TEWL. Repeated sweating can temporarily modify surface pH, which in healthy skin is maintained around 4.7.

How to read it
The signals your
skin is sending you.
The barrier doesn't warn suddenly. It warns progressively, with signals that are easy to attribute to other causes. Recognizing them in time prevents entering a cycle of reactivity.
Tightness after water or sun exposure
The skin has lost lipids and is trying to compensate for water loss.
Redness where it didn't appear before
A compromised barrier allows irritants to penetrate deeper than before.
Products you once tolerated now sting
The product hasn't changed. Your tolerance threshold has lowered.
Dry skin even when you moisturize
If the barrier is permeable, water evaporates before it can be retained. It's not a lack of product.
Breakouts in unusual areas or at unusual times
Inflammation can manifest differently when the barrier has been under continuous pressure for days.

| − | Introduce retinol or AHA if there's reactivity | Retinol and AHAs on a compromised barrier increase irritation and, in the case of AHA, UV sensitivity (Kornhauser 2009). BHA (salicylic acid) does not increase photosensitivity but also irritates damaged barriers. |

Return to the routine, after.
If you've been experiencing tightness, redness, or breakouts for days, the logic isn't to add more. It's to simplify first, give the barrier room, and return to the full routine when the skin has stabilized.

Reduce your routine to a minimum
Gentle, low-pH cleanser, repairing moisturizer, SPF. Three steps that don't irritate and give the barrier space to reorganize itself.

Pause strong actives
Retinol, AHA, BHA. It's not about eliminating them forever. It's about giving the barrier the margin it needs. When reactivity subsides, they are gradually reintroduced.

Prioritize ceramides, panthenol, and centella
Ceramides and cholesterol provide the lipids the barrier needs to reorganize. Panthenol accelerates the recovery of irritated skin. Centella has robust preclinical and growing clinical evidence in repair and inflammation.

Hydrate in layers
Serum with repairing actives first, cream on top to seal. Cream alone hydrates the surface; serum works deeper.

Generous SPF, always
A compromised barrier is more sensitive to UV. On days of high exposure, SPF isn't the last step of the routine. It's what makes the rest make sense.
